95% of Our Life is Habit

I’m reading The Great Upshift.

Multiple authors have contributed to this book on the theme of humanity advancing towards peace and harmony. They provide a good blend of scientific and spiritual thinking. It kicks off with Bruce Lipton who, in my opinion, is always worth a listen.

He says, “When the conscious mind is engaged in thought, it is disconnected from observing the current reality.”

Really? Tell me more.

“The creative conscious mind that manifests wishes, desires and aspirations only controls 5% of our life experiences, while 95% of our life is controlled by habits downloaded into the subconscious mind.”

And the majority of those habits, he says, were downloaded before the age of 7. This is when we are filled with beliefs that are disempowering, self-sabotaging, and limiting.

That made me pause.

I tried not to think.

Heck! 95% of the time we are flying on an auto-pilot that was not of our own making?

I’m trying to remember my life up to seven years old. What were my influences? Mostly, family and prep school. We didn’t have a TV as my parents thought it to be a bad influence. I felt deprived at the time but these days I totally agree with them!

I know I spent a lot of my time talking with my teddy bears. I wonder what those conversations were about, I know we had a lot of laughs. I also remember I had an Encyclopaedia, a huge book with lots of pictures that explained Everything.

There was always music, either radio, or my parent’s records, or my mother singing. And then, in 1962, when I have just turned seven, I saw The Beatles singing ‘Love Me Do’. I remember laughing at them because they had long hair. Oh dear, I was already programmed by then!

So how to clear up the downloads? How to stop acting on impulse? How to stop the disempowering habits? If we could start again and rewrite our code, what would our values be? Do we need to change the Common Sense? I was taught such tenets as: to speak the truth, to be polite, and to treat people with respect. Yet these tenets create the cracks through which the undesirable cold caller or fake news reporter can stick a crow bar. We have to re-evaluate our relationship with people we do not know yet, not lose sight of the good that is inherent in the vast majority.

It kinda shows us how important it is to increase that 5% each day; to make more time for the arrows of inspiration to reach our awareness; to make space for those moments when we can shift our consciousness from our mind into our heart. When we listen to our heart’s perspective on our life, it often suggests a different course from the one our mind is set upon.

Time in Nature helps a great deal. Not only do the scents given off by a woodland* or the sea give us a boost, they also give us the opportunity to get away from the constant noise of commercial living.

However we choose to do it, take time out, with no interruptions, and just quieten the mind from all the jabber and chatter that goes on in there. Breathe and release the shoulders; breathe and relax; breathe and be… When we do this we can give that 5% a boost.

May the blessings of this deep wintertide be with you.
