Calan Mai

Just beyond the setting greengages, I can see the blossom of the Bramley apple awakening, white and pink.

I marvel at Nature’s rotation of blossoms. In my garden the blackthorn bushes are still flowering although it is late in the season and all around Hawthorn’s tight buds are promising a glorious display in a few weeks. Since Hawthorn’s blossom is the sign for the start of summer days, a celebration we call Beltane, I find the energy a little conflicting. It certainly feels as though summer has arrived but maybe that is because I am lucky enough to have a warm bed in my bungalow. If I slept under the greening trees I might well question it’s approach!

Yet, though cold winds still blow from the north and the night time may well have a nip of frost, there is no doubt that the energy of the sun is stronger. I am working in my garden in shirt sleeves, the warm jacket cast aside until later in the evening light.

ooOOOoo

Just as the brightening sunlight calls to our plants, so she calls to us.

“Come outside,” she smiles. “Dance in my sparkling light. Let me fill you with hope and love and promise. Let me show you your dreams, let me help you make them and bring them into presence.”

There is excitement in her call, how can I resist?

Yes, my Lady, I will dance in your love light. I will dance and spin and feel your energy arising within me, I shall dance with Oak and with Ash, I shall dance in the bluebell wood under the lime green leaves of Beech.

And as I dance so my feet beat upon the ground like a drum, encouraging the energy to keep rising; beating out the rhythm of Beltane, calling to the rising sap. Dance and dance for this is the expression of joy, the joy of being alive.

At last, exhausted by the dance, I stand among the trees. My body, tingling with the sunlight now glowing within me, roots sprout from my feet reaching deep into the earth beneath, exploring the ground, feeling her loving support feeding and caressing me as my frenetic dance subsides. Now I stand strong and tall, resplendent in the robes she hangs about me. I raise my arms to reach for the sun and feel his glorious warmth course through me, reaching into my being and helping me to grow.

Held between Earth and Sun, I am a bridge of sap and sunlight, I am nourished, I am loved. I hold the promise of great things; all dreams, all thoughts can come into fruition when my heart is connected to Earth and Sun. This is my strength, this is my humanity. And so I dream of the world I long to live in. The sunlight of my dance has cast out all shadows and now I feel only love. I send this love into my dream, the blessed becomes the blessing.

Here is bliss.

May the rising energy of this season also fill you with love and courage.
