So ordinary, in fact, that my discovery of this was nothing short of a revelation.
The OED describes ‘ordinary’ as: “With no special or distinctive features; normal.” Normal! Quite right, too. Being ordinary is normal.
None of us is more special than another person. None of us is more distinctive, nor more worthy, nor more special than the next person. Whether high born or low born we are equally ordinary.
And in this ordinary world, we are all privileged. We have the privilege of diving into our box of ordinariness to find pearls and diamonds. We all have them, they are inside us but, for some reason, we are not taught about them. It’s no good blaming our parents or teachers because they don’t know that we have them either, they have not found their own yet.
But they are there.
So what is it like to be ordinary?
It is about being human. Truly human. A human who is rooted so deeply into our earthly home that they can raise their arms like branches to reach into the heavens and wear stars on their fingers.
Wow! That’s being human?
It most certainly is! It is about grasping the opportunity to feel the love and connection of being part of this beautiful planet. It is about knowing we are part of this great cosmic experience and that all that happens to us has a purpose. It is about spinning our dreams into existence in this world we live in. It is about trusting that we are safe and held and loved. It is about knowing that our input is just as important as everyone else’s. It’s about allowing ourselves to be real and not striving to emulate someone else.
It’s about following our own path with confidence and not worrying if we should be following another. Why? Because they all lead to the same place anyway.
And where is that?
The place of knowing, of remembering that we are all part of the cosmic creation. A tiny shard of the great universal jewel. Yes, all the opportunities that the universe has to offer are already inside our ordinary self.
Go on. Open the box.
